What is the Manuka Honey UMF Rating all about? All About Honey

Unique Manuka Factor UMF®

An antibacterial property, discovered by Dr Peter Molan (University of Waikato’s Honey Research Unit), that is more powerful and more stable over time (resistant to breakdown as a result of heat, light and enzymes) compared to Hydrogen Peroxide UMF® Standard: The only internationally recognized standard in identifying and measuring the antibacterial strength of UMF® Manuka Honey.

Its value (5+, 10+, etc.), determined by approved independent laboratory testings, indicates the quantity and strength of the honey’s UMF® antibacterial potency.

Strict measures are in place to ensure that Manuka Honey pass stringent criteria before they can be labelled as "UMF® Manuka Honey". Only Manuka Honey that is both packed and later tested in New Zealand are conferred the distinguished "UMF® Label".

Always look out for a 4-digit license number on the label to check for authenticity. You may refer to the <a href="http://www.umf.org.nz/licensees" target="_blank" title="UMF licensee">list of licensees</a>&nbsp;from the UMF® <a href="http://www.umf.org.nz/" target="_blank" title="Unique Manuka Factor® Honey Association ">Honey Association in New Zealand</a>.</li></ul><div style="text-align: justify;">&nbsp;</div><div style="text-align: justify;">

UMF values correspond to the strength and quantity of the honey’s non-peroxide UMF antibacterial potency. Research has shown that honey with UMF values 10+ and above are most suitable for therapeutic purposes (e.g. bed sores, scars and open wounds).

UMF values/ratings are classified as follows:

0 – 4: no detectable effect

5 – 9: ideal for maintenance of body’s well-being, no therapeutic effect

10 – 14: suitable for most purposes – recommended by the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato

15 and above: superior levels of UMF antibacterial activity

The Pure New Zealand Manuka Honey you can find at HoneySpree comes with the UMF rating, verified by the License Number 1069.
