Manuka Honey: Any Side Effects?

Manuka honey is a type of honey that is produced in New Zealand and comes from the Manuka bush. Out of all the varieties of honey (and there are over 300 in the United States alone!), manuka honey is known having the most health benefits. It’s not just a sweetener; it can also be used to promote oral health, as a natural beauty remedy and as a home remedy for minor illnesses such as cough and sore throat.

The answer: when taken in moderation and according to the recommended quantities, there are no side effects to using manuka honey.

That said, here are a few things that you should take note of:

  • An allergic reaction to manuka honey is possible, as it could be triggered by traces of bee venom or pollen in the honey. If you or your loved ones have a history of allergic reactions (particularly to pollen or bees), be on the lookout for any negative reactions after consuming manuka honey. This could manifest in the form of a rash, difficulty breathing or swallowing, coughing or wheezing or vomiting. In the event any of that occurs, seek immediate medical attention!

 

  • Manuka honey is loaded with sugars and carbs -- one tablespoon is said to contain 16g of sugar and 18g of carbohydrates. Thus consuming manuka honey could affect your blood sugar levels. That said, manuka honey does not affect blood sugar as much as sugar does, so it’s still safe for you to use it as a sugar substitute. If you are diabetic or simply watching your sugar intake, manuka honey is a good alternative.

 

Using manuka honey is no more dangerous than consuming any other health foods. Educate yourself on the recommended dosage and uses.
